Understanding Furnace efficiency
Furnace stages & AFUE - Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency
- Furnace AFUE efficiency rating is an indicator of how efficient a furnace is.
- 80% AFUE means that 80% of the gas that the furnace burns is converted into heat blown into the conditioned space. 95%, 96% and 97% means that 95%, 96% or 97% of the gas that the furnace burns is converted into heat blown into the conditioned space.
- Investing in a higher efficiency furnace now means that you will get a quicker return on investment in energy savings.
- More stages means more comfort
- 1-stage, 2-stage and modulating stages furnaces differ in their operation in terms of how many burning settings they have.
- 1-stage furnaces always work at 100% of their capacity even if the need for heat is minimal. After a furnace turns on it runs for a set amount of time and usually overshoots the set temperature to delay subsequent operation.
- Investing in a 2-stages or even modulating furnace now is the right choice in terms of comfort. While the energy savings of these units, compared with 1-stage systems are not significant, they will give you the option to adjust the blower speed, meaning reduced operating noise, and more importantly, you will feel much more comfortable due to a smaller temperature swings. All of our costumers that have chosen a 2-stage or modulating furnace upgrade are very satisfied and we definitely recommend these systems to improve the comfort of your home.
